A Gift of Gratitude
Giulio II, one of the most influential popes in history, was known for his patronage of the arts and his lavish lifestyle. In 1509, he received a magnificent gift from the Chigi family, a powerful banking clan from Siena. The gift was so impressive that Giulio II granted the Chigis the right to use the Rovere coat of arms, a symbol of great honor and prestige.
A Prince of the Renaissance
Agostino Chigi della Rovere III, the prince of Farnese who commissioned the gift, was a prominent member of the Chigi family. He was a wealthy and cultured man who played an important role in the cultural and political life of Renaissance Italy.
The gift to Giulio II was a reflection of the close ties between the Chigis and the papacy. The Chigis had long been supporters of the Catholic Church, and their gift was a way to express their gratitude for the pope's favor.
