The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) have charged one of their officers in connection with a deadly shooting in Yellowknife on May 12.

The officer, whose name has not been released, has been charged with one count of manslaughter and one count of assault.

The charges stem from an incident in which the officer shot and killed a man during a traffic stop.

The RCMP said in a statement that the officer was responding to a call about a stolen vehicle when he pulled over the suspect's car.

The officer said the suspect tried to flee and then reached for a weapon, at which point the officer fired his gun.

The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.

The RCMP said the incident is still under investigation.
