Epilepsy in Pregnancy: A Serious Risk

Substantial Increase in Pregnancy Complications

A recent study has found that women with epilepsy have a significantly higher risk of severe pregnancy complications, including a substantial increase in mortality. The study, published in the journal Neurology, looked at data from over 2 million women who gave birth in the United States between 2007 and 2012. The researchers found that women with epilepsy were more likely to experience premature birth, low birth weight, and seizures during pregnancy. They were also more likely to die during childbirth.

Why the Increased Risk?

There are several possible explanations for the increased maternal mortality among pregnant women with epilepsy. One possibility is that the seizures themselves can lead to complications for both the mother and the baby. Another possibility is that the medications used to treat epilepsy can cross the placenta and reach the fetus, which can lead to birth defects. Additionally, women with epilepsy may be more likely to have other health conditions, such as heart disease or diabetes, which can also increase the risk of pregnancy complications.

The management of epilepsy during pregnancy is challenging and complicated. Women who are pregnant or planning to become pregnant should talk to their doctor about the risks of epilepsy and the steps that can be taken to reduce those risks.
