Years after his last appearance as Iron Man, Robert Downey Jr. is returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) in a surprising new role. At the San Diego Comic-Con Hall H panel, Downey Jr. shocked fans by removing a mask, revealing himself as the iconic supervillain Doctor Doom.
The casting announcement was met with both excitement and confusion among fans. Downey Jr. has been synonymous with the MCU's Iron Man character for over a decade, and his departure from the franchise in 2019's Avengers: Endgame was a major event.
However, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige explained that Downey Jr.'s return as Doctor Doom is a chance for the actor to explore a new side of the MCU. "Robert is one of the most talented actors of our time," Feige said. "We're thrilled to have him back in the Marvel family, this time as one of our most iconic villains."
Doctor Doom is set to appear in the upcoming Avengers movie, titled Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, which is scheduled for release in July 2024. The film will also feature Jonathan Majors as Kang the Conqueror, the MCU's new major antagonist.
